Artwork Description: I was originally inspired to create an alligator themed painting by seeing an artwork by the scientific illustrator Maria Sibylla Merian, who was active in the 1600s. See my blog post here about the painting. However, I changed around the style of the piece more in line with what I am doing, and I added a capuchin monkey, to reference the Monkey and Alligator story in the Jakata ( a collection of tales of the Buddha's previous animal reincarnations in Indian mythology). So if you are worried for the monkey in this picture, don't be. He fools the alligator in the end. I also made the alligator an albino, for artistic purposes, as I thought it would contrast better with the black and white monkey and the background.

PRESS: This artwork was featured in a newspaper article in the Bucks County Courier in November 2015. The article reviewed a group show Lynnette Shelley participated in called "The Call of the Wild" at The Gallery at Lower Bucks Campus, Bucks County Community College, Bristol, Pennsylvania. In the review, the reporter said her work "The Monkey's Tale" was one of the most striking works in the exhibition.
